CAMDEN FLAT

A Sophisticated Bachelor Pad

My client, an art-loving bachelor with a penchant for cigars and an extensive collection of wines and whiskies, wanted to create a home that put his interests front-and-center. My initial inspiration was a London members’ club to highlight his man-about-town aesthetic. I chose a tobacco-yellow paint for the walls inspired by his love of cigars. A vintage midcentury drinks cabinet showcases his drinks collection, and a 1960s G Plan dining table doubles as a games table when he’s entertaining. We kept his beautifully patinated leather couch and Eames chair added a Persian-style rug to add softness and pattern and an oversized smoked mirror to antique-style glamour. We also moved all the bookshelves to one side of the fireplace and moved the wall of plants to the other end of the room to add visual balance.

His art collection includes a Damien Hirst print, which I gave pride of place in the primary bedroom. We moved a pair of wardrobes, which are family heirlooms, to either side of the window to better utilize the space. I brought in his love of Japan with geisha- and Samurai-print pillows and a Japanese landscape tapestry above the bed. An under-window bench hides his workout equipment and creates a cozy nook overlooking the garden, a perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee.

BEFORE
A dark, disjointed space overwhelmed by clutter.

AFTER
A bright, timeless space layered in warmth and softness through textures, natural materials and thoughtfully chosen details that highlight the client’s interests.

BEFORE
A poorly laid-out bedroom lacking in personalty and comfort.

AFTER
A cozy and inviting room that exudes comfort and character. We reconfigured the layout for optimal flow and layered in artwork, a rug, a tapestry and two mirrors. We painted the walls a sandy cream to bring in warmth.
